A deadly cholera outbreak has struck six local government areas in Niger State, claiming 13 lives and hospitalizing over 236 residents, in what authorities have described as a rapidly escalating public health emergency.
The outbreak, first reported in Shiroro Local Government Area on Sunday, has since spread to Bosso, Minna (Chanchaga), Magama, Bida, and Munya, with Shiroro, Bosso, and Minna emerging as the hardest-hit areas.
Government Responds with Urgency
Confirming the crisis, Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, announced that the state has activated a multi-sectoral response to curb the spread of the disease.
“We have established treatment and isolation centres and commenced aggressive sensitisation campaigns targeting all corners of society,” Dr. Dangana said.
A new isolation and treatment centre has been opened at the old wing of the Late Senator Idris Ibrahim Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre along Old Airport Road, Minna, to handle the increasing number of cases.
Sensitisation in Full Gear
The state’s awareness drive now includes partnerships with religious institutions, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Islamic groups, as well as outreach to all eight emirates in the state, ensuring widespread community engagement.
Commendations and Support
Dr. Dangana commended Governor Umaru Bago for his swift response to the crisis and also acknowledged the support of donor agencies who have contributed to the emergency relief efforts.
Adding to the urgency, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare, reiterated that Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro are at the epicentre of the outbreak and require heightened medical attention and resources.
Health officials are urging residents in affected areas to maintain strict hygiene, boil drinking water, and report any symptoms of diarrhea or vomiting to the nearest healthcare centre immediately.
As containment efforts intensify, the people of Niger State are hoping for quick stabilization and continued government support to avert further loss of lives.
