The Niger Delta Peace Advocates have called on the United Nations (UN) to disregard allegations of human rights violations leveled against Chief Government Ekpemupolo, the Director of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr. Dennis Otuaro, and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Mele Kyari.

The advocacy group made this appeal during a press briefing held at the UN office in Switzerland, shortly before submitting a formal statement to the global body.

Addressing journalists, the Director-General of the Niger Delta Peace Advocates, Mr. Esimaje Awani, a legal practitioner, dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. He argued that the accusations originated from individuals opposed to the peace and development efforts spearheaded by Chief Ekpemupolo, Dr. Otuaro, and Mr. Kyari in the Niger Delta region.

According to Awani, these leaders have significantly contributed to regional stability, economic growth, and community development. He highlighted Dr. Otuaro’s achievements in empowering ex-agitators, fostering economic progress, and promoting social initiatives. He also emphasized Chief Ekpemupolo’s crucial role in enhancing security, particularly through his engagement of local communities in pipeline surveillance and environmental protection.

Furthermore, Awani commended Mr. Kyari’s contributions to economic stability in the Niger Delta, asserting that attempts to tarnish their reputations are driven by selfish interests.

He urged the UN to recognize and appreciate their positive impact rather than entertain baseless allegations. He reaffirmed the Niger Delta Peace Advocates’ unwavering support for Dr. Otuaro, Mr. Kyari, Chief Ekpemupolo, and other key figures dedicated to the region’s progress.

The high point of the event was the formal submission of their petition to the UN office.
