The Nigeria Police Force has arrested the President of the Niger Delta Congress (NDC) following the group’s planned protest against the federal government’s imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State.

Reports indicate that the NDC leader was detained in Port Harcourt on Tuesday and is currently held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Rivers State.

According to sources, the police had initially invited the NDC’s spokesperson, Mudiaga Ogboru, over his public condemnation of the emergency rule and his call for Niger Delta residents to protest against the directive. However, rather than waiting for Ogboru’s response, security operatives arrested the NDC president instead.

“The police issued an invitation to Mudiaga Ogboru for speaking out against the emergency rule and encouraging civil action. Instead of waiting for his response, they detained our president, who has remained in custody since yesterday,” a source disclosed.

Confirming the development, Ogboru stated that he received two separate police invitations one from the Lagos State Police Command and another from the Rivers State Police Command both linked to the planned demonstration.

“I received two different invitations regarding our protest against the emergency rule in Rivers. Since they couldn’t locate me, they arrested our president in Port Harcourt instead,” Ogboru said.

As of the time of this report, the police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest.
