NANS Protest: Aiyedatiwa Pledges Action To Student Leaders

Following a peaceful protest by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC) Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has met with student leaders to address their concerns and improve education conditions in the state.

The governor praised the students for conducting an orderly demonstration, recognizing their right to advocate for better learning environments.

In a statement, NANS JCC Ondo State Chairman, Comrade Oluwarotimi Joshua, said Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted steps his administration has already taken to enhance education. These include increased funding for tertiary institutions and the prompt disbursement of bursaries and scholarships.

According to the statement:

– The governor directed the Ministry of Infrastructure to begin repairs on internal roads within tertiary institutions. Plans for roads leading to campuses, such as Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, have already been finalized.
– Efforts are underway to revive abandoned hostel projects through engagement with relevant intervention agencies, improving student accommodation.
– The management of the former Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (now Ondo State University of Agriculture and Agribusiness) was instructed to organize convocation ceremonies for students who graduated over the past ten years.
– Security agencies have been tasked with maintaining peace across campuses and ensuring student safety.
– Discussions also included the renovation of the NYSC camp in Ikare-Akoko, resolving land disputes at the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure, and providing buses for student union governments.
– A key concern raised was the lack of adequate transportation for students. The governor assured that measures are being put in place to establish a reliable and sustainable transport system.

Comrade Joshua commended the governor’s swift response and commitment to addressing student concerns. However, he emphasized that NANS would closely monitor the implementation of these promises to ensure they lead to meaningful improvements for students.
