Scores of militants have voluntarily laid down their arms in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, marking a major breakthrough in the state’s ongoing peace and security efforts.

The militants emerged from the creeks in the early hours of Friday, January 16, 2026, and surrendered themselves under the Cross River State Government’s amnesty programme at Atimbo Rear Area, Operation OKWOK.

The surrender involved fighters from two militant camps, with a large cache of weapons, ammunition, speedboats, and other military equipment handed over to the Nigerian Army. The former militants have since been transferred to state authorities for profiling and reintegration processes.

Security agencies say the development is a significant step toward restoring lasting peace and stability in the area.
