Mbappe goes blank as Real Madrid draws Mallorca
In the opening game of their title defense, Kylian Mbappe’s Real Madrid La Liga debut was marred by frustration as a resolute Real Mallorca side held the Spanish and European champions to a 1-1 draw.
Dominik Greif, the goalkeeper for Mallorca, stopped the French sensation, and after Rodrygo Goes gave Madrid the lead early on, the home team tied the score in the second half with a huge header from Vedat Muriqi.
In the closing moments of the match at Son Moix Stadium, Mallorca came closer to winning the match than Madrid, despite their star-studded roster.
Ferland Mendy, a defender for Los Blancos, was dismissed during stoppage time for a strong challenge on Muriqi.
Jude Bellingham started in midfield behind the attacking trio of Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo for Real Madrid, which defeated Atalanta to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti made this lineup choice.
In his first game in charge of the Copa del Rey runners-up, Mallorca coach Jagoba Arrasate could not have asked for a more difficult opponent than the defending champions, who were further strengthened by Mbappe’s appearance.
But his team accepted the challenge and scored a well-deserved point.
Madrid, who won the championship with only one loss all previous season, got out to a fast start and seized the lead thanks to a deft move involving their Brazilian attackers.
Vinicius reverse-rolled the ball for Rodrygo to gather in the vicinity, and the winger bowed a shot into the far corner, out of Greif’s grasp.
Madrid remained ahead but was unable to extend their lead as the goalie turned away another Rodrygo shot and Mbappe’s attempt.
Arrasate asked his team to play into halftime, and they complied, shutting down Los Blancos’ star-studded lineup.
