Mayhem as 18 passengers get burnt to death
On Monday, 18 people tragically lost their lives in a fire caused by a crash involving a white Toyota Hiace bus near RCC yard along the Ijebu-Ode/Benin expressway. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 pm, also left the driver critically injured.
The accident happened when the bus, which was carrying a keg of petrol, drove over a damaged section of the road. The keg fell and its contents spilled onto the exhaust pipe, igniting the fire. Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed that the driver is receiving treatment at Rona Hospital, while the deceased were taken to the State Hospital in Ijebu Ode.
Akinbiyi extended condolences to the victims’ families and advised against transporting petrol in vehicles due to the risks involved.
Additionally, a Mazda bus with registration No JGB 330 ZT crashed around Ita Osu on the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu expressway at approximately 6:45 pm, injuring seven people. The crash was attributed to excessive speeding and a tyre burst, which caused the vehicle to overturn. The injured were taken to the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta.
