The Federal Government has raised an urgent red flag over imminent flooding in 19 states and 76 locations across Nigeria, warning residents to brace for heavy rainfall between August 5 and August 9, 2025.
The alert was issued by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, following fresh incidents of devastating floods in Ogun and Gombe states earlier this week.
States on the high-risk list include:
Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Cross River, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Gombe.
In the past months, Nigeria has experienced a wave of tragic flood events. In Mokwa, Niger State, over 200 lives were lost in May following a catastrophic dam collapse. Rivers State saw deadly landslides and flash floods that killed at least 25 people, while 13 fatalities were recorded in Kwara and Mokwa after Jebba Dam’s water release swept away farms and homes.
The Ministry urged residents, especially in flood-prone communities, to take precautionary measures, evacuate high-risk zones, and cooperate with emergency response agencies to mitigate loss of life and property.
