Labour Party Postpones National Convention, Congresses To Expand Membership Participation
The Labour Party has postponed its scheduled ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention, in a move aimed at ensuring broader participation among members.
The party announced that the decision was taken to allow more Nigerians to take part in its ongoing membership re-registration exercise, which it described as a critical step toward strengthening its internal structure ahead of future political activities.
According to a statement issued in Abuja by the Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the adjustment followed consultations with key stakeholders within the party.
Originally, the ward congresses were slated to begin on March 26, 2026, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and the national convention on April 11. However, the revised timeline will now be announced at a later date.
The party explained that the postponement was agreed upon during a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee and representatives of labour unions, with a focus on promoting inclusiveness.
As part of preparations for the rescheduled process, the party has inaugurated a 45-member Congress and Convention Committee. The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives, alongside other notable party figures.
Speaking during the inauguration, the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, urged committee members to carry out their responsibilities with diligence, neutrality, and a commitment to transparency.
She emphasised that the postponement should be used as an opportunity to ensure adequate preparation for a smooth and credible exercise.
The party also appealed to its members, supporters, and the Independent National Electoral Commission for understanding, reaffirming its commitment to conducting a transparent and inclusive congress and convention process.
A new timetable for the activities is expected to be released in due course.
