The Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party has endorsed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as the party’s National Leader.

The endorsement was announced at a meeting of the party’s Interim National Working Committee (NWC) held in Abuja and communicated through a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting.

According to the factional National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, the decision to recognise Governor Otti as national leader was reached unanimously by members of the committee.

The meeting, chaired by Senator Nenadi Usman, was convened in line with the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution 2019 (as amended) to deliberate on issues affecting the party’s stability, growth, and strategic direction.

The development comes weeks after the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, defected to the African Democratic Congress on December 31, 2025.

The committee noted that discussions at the meeting covered reports from the ongoing nationwide membership revalidation and registration exercise, preparations for the party’s congresses and forthcoming national convention, as well as recent political developments within the party.

Addressing Obi’s defection, the faction stated that it harbours no resentment toward the former presidential candidate, while maintaining that the Labour Party remains united and committed to its ideological principles.

The Usman-led leadership also welcomed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s reaffirmation of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which removed Julius Abure as National Chairman of the party.

Based on the judgment, the faction urged INEC to fully recognise the current leadership structure of the Labour Party in compliance with the ruling of the apex court.
