Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo Resigns Amid Impeachment Threats
The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has officially resigned from office following mounting political pressure and impeachment proceedings initiated against him.
His resignation was confirmed on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu, bringing an end to weeks of political uncertainty in the state.
The resignation comes shortly after the Kano State House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor.
Reports indicate that 38 lawmakers backed the motion, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The impeachment notice was formally presented during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore, following its introduction by the Majority Leader, Lawan Husseini Dala.
Lawmakers accused Gwarzo of receiving illegal financial benefits from local government councils in the state.
According to the Assembly, he allegedly collected ₦1.5 million monthly from each of the 44 local government areas between June 2023 and January 2024 amounting to about ₦462 million over seven months.
Further allegations claimed that between February and July 2024, he received ₦3.255 million monthly from each council under the guise of executing special assignments, bringing the total to approximately ₦726 million within that period.
Sources suggest that Gwarzo’s political challenges intensified after he reportedly declined to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress, a move allegedly considered by some political actors within the state.
The development marks a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape, with implications for governance and party dynamics in the state.
Further details regarding succession and the next line of action by the state government are expected in the coming days.
