Itsekiri Crowned Champions as Delta Peace and Unity Cup Concludes – Arogbo-Ibe Voice (AIV)

Orerokpe town came alive on Sunday, December 8, as sports enthusiasts, royal dignitaries, and former Nigerian internationals gathered for the grand finale of the 2024 Delta Peace and Unity Cup.

The highly anticipated football competition, spearheaded by Comrade Sheriff Mulade, brought together Delta State’s diverse ethnic groups, promoting peace, unity, and camaraderie. Held at the Baptist High School Field, the event attracted a cross-section of society, including professional bodies like the Ijaw Publishers’ Forum (IPF).

The thrilling day commenced with a Third-Place clash between Team Urhobo and Team Isoko, paving the way for the much-awaited final between Team Itsekiri (Ugbomarun FC) and Team Ndokwa (Ndokwa East United FC).

Although delays pushed the kick-off to 3:20 PM, the game delivered on its promise of excitement. Team Itsekiri opened scoring just five minutes into the match, but Team Ndokwa responded with an equalizer in the 21st minute. Itsekiri regained the lead in the 36th minute, heading into halftime with a narrow 2-1 advantage.

The second half intensified as both sides fought for supremacy. However, a decisive goal in the 89th minute secured Team Itsekiri’s 3-1 victory, crowning them champions of the maiden edition of the tournament.

The tournament finale underscored its purpose of fostering harmony among Deltans. The occasion was honored by dignitaries, including the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom and representatives of the Ogulagha Kingdom.

Comrade Sheriff Mulade, the tournament’s convener, applauded the teams and attendees for their unwavering support and encouraged everyone to partake in a post-match reception at the Africa 4 Peace Games Village and Event Center in Ugolo, near Osubi.

The Delta Peace and Unity Cup not only showcased local football talent but also emphasized the importance of collaboration and understanding among Delta’s ethnic groups. As Orerokpe town witnessed the curtains close on a successful maiden edition, expectations are high for an even grander tournament in the years to come.
