The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared that Nigeria’s state governors are enjoying unprecedented revenue inflows under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the current period as a “wonderful time” to lead a state.

Akpabio made the remark while speaking on the financial position of state governments following reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.

According to the Senate President, monthly allocations to states have risen dramatically, with governors now sharing between N1.9 trillion and N2.7 trillion, a figure he noted was significantly higher than what states received in previous years.

This is a wonderful time to be a governor. Unlike before, state governors are now sharing between N1.9 trillion and N2.7 trillion under President Tinubu,” Akpabio said.

The comment comes amid ongoing national discussions about the impact of federal fiscal reforms, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidies and changes in revenue distribution that have significantly boosted the Federation Account allocations to states.

Analysts say the surge in revenue presents both an opportunity and a responsibility for state governments to accelerate development, improve infrastructure, and address the rising cost of living affecting Nigerians.

However, critics argue that despite the increased allocations, many citizens have yet to feel tangible improvements in their daily lives, raising questions about accountability and how state governments are utilizing the funds.

Akpabio’s statement has since sparked debate across political and economic circles, with stakeholders urging governors to translate the increased financial inflow into visible progress in healthcare, education, security, and economic growth.

As revenue inflows continue to rise, attention is now turning to how effectively Nigeria’s 36 state governments will deploy the funds to address pressing socio-economic challenges.
