Arogbo-Ijaws in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State have called on the National Boundary Commission to rectify their exclusion from the Commission’s recently published gazzet touching the coastal region of Ondo State.

In a statement released by one of their lawyers, Barr. Kariakitei Kokowei, they advocated for the inclusion of Arogbo-Kingdom Communities’ in Nigeria’s National Boundary Commission regulations. Addressing the Commission they stated that despite being within 500 meters of the coastline, they were excluded from host communities’ benefits.

Communities in Ilaje Local Government Area, farther from the coastline, were listed instead . They called on the Commission to correct this anomaly. Barr. Kokowei describing the unjust exclusion as the handiwork of fratricidal oil politics, warned of agitation and legal action if unresolved.

Attached to the statement are documents and a list of the excluded communities and a map. The letter is addressed to the National Boundary Commission and copied to various government officials.

READ FULL STATEMENT BELOW:

RE: NATIONAL BOUNDARY COMMISSION (HOST COMMUNITIES WITHIN 500 METERS OF THE BUFFER ALONG COAST LINES OF LAGOS, OGUN, ONDO , DELTA AND AKWA-IBOM STATE) REGULATIONS, 2024; THE URGENT NEED TO INCLUDE COMMUNITIES IN AROGBO KINGDOM, ESE-ODO LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF ONDO STATE WITHIN THE 500 METERS OF BUFFERS OF THE BUFFER ALONG THE COASTLINE

We are counsel to the people of Ese-odo local government particularly to the people of Arogbo kingdom, Ese-odo, Ondo State, hereinafter referred to as our clients. We are writing on the instruction of our clients.

Our clients were shocked, surprised and highly disappointed when they read the federal Republic of Nigeria official Gazette, NO: 48 vol. lll of 18th of March, 2024 wherein several communities in Ilaje local government area of Ondo state were listed as ” host communities” for purpose of entitlement to a certain of upstream companies actual annual operating expenditure of the preceding financial year as enshrined in the petroleum host communities Development Regulations 2022 while communities in the entire Arogbo axis of Ese-odo Local government Area which are within the 500 meters of the Buffer along coastlines were deliberately, illegally or inadvertently excluded from the list of host communities.

Our communities are more worried that communities like Oroto, Ilutitun and others listed in the Gazette are farther from the coastline than the entire Ukparama Ward l and ll in Arogbo axis in Ese- odo, Ondo state.

We believe this is a product of the fratricidal oil politics being played in Nigeria that has held the nation down. It is an unjust exclusion that must be speedily corrected and this can be done by your good office commissioning team to embark on facts finding mission to Ese-odo to get on the spot assessment of the communities to know whether or not they fall within the 500 meters yardstick used.

Our clients now depend on your good office, facilities, capacity and understanding to correct this anomaly within a reasonable time as our clients’ communities are already agitated over this unjust exclusion and are ready to seek other legal remedies to redress this injustice in the event that your office failed to take appropriate remedial action.

Thanks for consideration and understanding.
