As the sun rises on another year of the life of High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, fondly known as Tompolo, the Niger Delta and beyond pause to celebrate not just a man, but a spiritual enigma—revered as a messenger of the divine and a cultural icon whose influence continues to shape the region’s spiritual, social, and humanitarian landscape.

Early Life Shrouded in Mystery

Though details of his early life remain elusive, oral traditions suggest Tompolo’s birth was steeped in mystery and spiritual significance. His real name, Oweizide Ekpemupolo, derives from a blend of his father’s names, “Thomas” and “Ekpemupolo.” Rather than being marked by typical childhood experiences, his formative years are believed to have been deeply spiritual—marked by a connection to ancestral teachings and the unseen world.

The Journey to Spiritual Leadership

Before his emergence as a public figure, Tompolo endured a series of life-altering events—economic hardship, displacement, and systemic injustice. These experiences ignited in him a quest for deeper understanding, eventually leading him into the embrace of traditional Ijaw spirituality.

As a devoted disciple of Egbesu-Woyin—a spiritual system that honors the divine feminine and the interconnectedness of all beings—Tompolo immersed himself in ancestral knowledge. Through divine revelations and rituals, he advanced in spiritual understanding, becoming a vessel for healing, worship, and divine instruction.

Emergence as a Divine Messenger

Tompolo’s role in the Niger Delta emancipation struggle is now regarded by many as a “Holy War”. His spiritual crusade extended beyond politics into a renaissance of African spirituality—particularly within Ijaw land. As spiritual head of the Ijaw ethnic nationality, and High Priest of the Bini-Ebi oceanic deity, Tompolo organizes religious festivals and teachings aimed at reviving indigenous spiritual practices.

He is admired for promoting interfaith dialogue and community unity, using his influence to foster peace and understanding while nurturing a broad and growing fellowship.

Prophetic Declaration in the Sacred Forest

On February 13, 2024, Tompolo made a profound declaration during a sacred gathering at Saimuzu Bou, an ancient forest shrine of the Aziza deity. In what he described as his “119th birthday,” he revealed that his birth was a result of a divine vow made by his mother before the Aziza spirit.

This Aziza forest is where I came from… my mother knelt and wept here. That is why no man can kill me… Aziza is the king of the dead, the giver of life, and the messenger of death,” Tompolo declared in Ijaw, translated to English.

This pronouncement elevated Tompolo’s spiritual status, with many now viewing him as the incarnate of the Aziza deity, confirming the divine origins of his life’s mission.

Legacy, Humanitarianism, and Enduring Impact

Tompolo’s life reflects a deep commitment to preserving Ijaw spirituality and empowering future spiritual leaders. His teachings have reverberated not just in the Niger Delta, but across the African continent and diaspora. His work through platforms such as the Tompolo Foundation and the Izon Cultural Heritage Centre has provided humanitarian support, education, and hope to thousands.

In addition to his spiritual accomplishments, he serves as Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd, and holds an Honorary Doctorate, among other prestigious awards in peacebuilding and philanthropy.

Despite criticism from detractors, Tompolo’s relentless devotion to humanity, justice, and spiritual truth continues to inspire millions. He is not only a symbol of hope and embodiment of love, but stands as a perfect model of leadership in modern African society.
