Halt in renovation of sport facilities hindering athletes progress _ SWAN ONDO CHAPTER

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State Chapter, has expressed concern over the halt in renovation work at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.

In a communique issued after their Congress on Friday, the association, led by Chairman Segun Giwa, lamented the project’s abandonment just three months after it was awarded, which hinders athletes’ access to the facility. This delay is expected to negatively impact local athletes preparing for national and international competitions, as well as those relying on the complex for their livelihoods.

“SWAN is dissatisfied with the project’s suspension at the Akure Stadium so soon after the contract was awarded by the state government,” the statement said. The association urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to visit the Sports Complex to determine the next steps.

SWAN also called on the governor to establish a board for the Ondo State Sports Council, similar to the one for the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), to enhance sports development. They noted that the absence of a council board has hindered the performance of sports associations in the state. With a board in place, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development could better focus on creating policies for advancing sports activities.

Additionally, SWAN praised the ODSFA leadership for their support and urged them to provide further assistance to Sunshine Stars FC to improve their performance in the current NPFL season. They also emphasized the need for Sunshine Queens to return to the Elite women’s league through proper early preparations.
