Government Scrambles to Address Growing Unrest: Emergency Meeting Called as Nationwide Protests Loom
In a move to mitigate the escalating tensions ahead of the planned nationwide protests on August 1, the Federal Government has convened an emergency meeting for today, Wednesday, July 24.
This comes after President Bola Tinubu’s appeal to the protest organizers to grant his administration more time to implement people-centric programs.
According to sources, the meeting will be attended by all ministers, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and select Special Advisers to the President, including Hadiza Bala-Usman, Bayo Onanuga, and Sunday Dare.
The gathering aims to address the grievances fueling the planned protests, which include soaring living costs and economic hardship exacerbated by recent policy reforms.
The meeting invitation, signed by Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah, emphasizes mandatory attendance, underscoring the government’s urgency to address the situation.
As the clock ticks closer to the August 1 protests, the administration’s response will be closely watched by the nation.
