Ondo State has been thrown into mourning following a violent attack by suspected armed herdsmen on several villages in the Akure North Local Government Area. The affected communities, including Aba Alajido, Aba Sunday, Aba Pastor, and Ademekun, were raided late Sunday night, forcing residents to flee for safety.
The African Action Congress (AAC) has strongly condemned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for what it describes as a failure to protect the people amid rising insecurity. In a statement signed by Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, a former AAC governorship candidate in the state, the party criticised the state government for its alleged incompetence and lack of accountability.
Reacting to the attack, which reportedly left over 20 people dead, Ajayi stated, “The state government under Governor Aiyedatiwa has proven to be incompetent, unaccountable, and incapable of defending our territories and securing lives and properties.”
He further accused the administration of lacking the political will and ideological depth necessary to address the crisis, warning that insecurity could spread across the state if urgent action was not taken.
“The Ondo State government lacks ideological depth and direction; a wannabe neo-liberal demagogue,” the statement read.
The AAC reiterated its call for governance that prioritises collective welfare over what it described as “individualistic roguery, mismanagement, and irresponsibility.” The party urged residents to demand better leadership, stating that Ondo State should not be “sunk in blood and mud” due to government failures.
While various reports indicate that at least 20 people were killed in the attack, the Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident but disputed the casualty figures. According to the police, an attack did occur, but they have not verified the claim that 20 farmers were killed.
Meanwhile, a video obtained by SaharaReporters, which is too graphic to be shared, reportedly shows the remains of five victims from one of the affected communities.
Ajayi concluded his statement by extending condolences to the affected communities and offering a message of hope to Ondo residents, expressing confidence that a better future lies ahead.
The AAC has vowed to continue speaking out against insecurity and demanding accountability from the government to ensure the safety of all Ondo State residents.
