Nigerians are set to experience significant relief from the rising cost of fuel and transportation as Dangote Petroleum Refinery begins nationwide distribution of petrol and diesel today using 4,000 newly acquired Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers.
The refinery, located in Lekki, Lagos State, commenced operations in January 2024 and is now launching this innovative distribution model to take fuel directly to marketers, manufacturers, telecom firms, aviation companies, and other major consumers bypassing traditional depots and intermediaries.
Industry experts have hailed the initiative, valued at ₦720 billion, as a game-changer expected to save Nigerians over ₦1.7 trillion annually in distribution costs, while supporting over 42 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by reducing energy expenses and boosting profitability.
“This approach will eliminate logistics bottlenecks, improve supply efficiency, and promote environmental sustainability,” said Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief of Branding and Communication at Dangote Industries.
The programme is also projected to create over 15,000 direct jobs across the logistics value chain and curb cross-border fuel smuggling. Over the next six weeks, at least 60 shiploads of CNG-powered tankers are expected to arrive in Nigeria to further strengthen the distribution network.
According to the company, the plan aligns with Dangote’s broader vision to enhance Nigeria’s energy security, promote cleaner fuel alternatives, and stimulate economic growth nationwide.
