The political atmosphere within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) grew more heated on Friday, August 8, 2025, as Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accused some party members of “political hypocrisy” over their renewed support for former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a post shared on his official X handle, Olayinka wrote:
“Those who because of ethnicity worked against the reelection of Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 are now saying the same Jonathan is PDP’s best bet for 2027 Presidential Election.”

His remarks came amid growing calls from influential PDP figures urging Jonathan to return as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.

One of the strongest endorsements came from former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today described Jonathan as the PDP’s “most formidable option.”

“I think for PDP now they should try to woo him; he is their best bet. To me, he is their best bet,” Lamido said, adding that any candidate presented by the PDP would receive nationwide support.

Lamido commended Jonathan’s leadership record, citing his political experience, inclusive governance style, and ability to build consensus across party lines. He argued that Jonathan’s return could help rebuild the PDP’s national appeal and restore public trust.

Jonathan, who governed Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, lost his re-election bid in a politically charged race marked by deep divisions within and outside the PDP. While his administration faced criticism over insecurity and corruption, he earned widespread respect for peacefully conceding defeat an act many regard as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
