Former FCT minister Useni dies at age 81

One of Nigeria’s prominent military officers, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Timbut Useni, has passed away at the age of 81. His death was announced by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

In a statement issued by Gyang Bere, the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mutfwang revealed that Useni, who served as the fourth military minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), died after a prolonged illness.

The statement read: *“The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, deeply regrets to inform the citizens of Plateau State and patriotic Nigerians of the passing of Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The distinguished elder statesman passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82, following a protracted illness.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend heartfelt condolences to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all others mourning this great loss.”*

Governor Mutfwang prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the family, Plateau State, and the nation during this period of mourning. He described Useni’s death as a significant loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the country as a whole.

He praised Useni’s exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication to service, which left a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s security and political spheres. He also commended the late general’s relentless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in the North and Plateau State, stating that his contributions would not be forgotten.

Lt. Gen. Useni served Nigeria in various capacities, including as a military governor of the defunct Bendel State, Minister of Transport, and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army.

Following his retirement from the military, the Langtang-born leader transitioned to politics, becoming the Deputy Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2015, he was elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He also served for five years as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a sociocultural and advocacy group for the 19 northern states.
