Flood disaster assessment, NEMA visits Ondo

Hajia Zubaida Umar, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), visited Ondo State for an on-site assessment of a recent flood incident. She was welcomed at the airport by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, who was leaving the state for official duties. This marked the start of her visit, which focused on disaster management, emergency preparedness, and the state’s response strategies.

Following her meeting with the governor, the Director General went to the Deputy Governor’s Office to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between NEMA and the state in handling emergencies and improving disaster response efforts. During this meeting, she highlighted her purpose in assessing the flood response in Ondo town and praised the collaboration between NEMA and the state government through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in flood awareness initiatives. She encouraged communities to adopt proactive measures for disaster risk reduction.

The Deputy Governor expressed appreciation for NEMA’s ongoing support and urged citizens to heed early warnings from authorities. He also stressed the importance of avoiding construction on waterways and maintaining proper waste management and drainage systems.

As part of the flood assessment, the Director General, accompanied by the Deputy Governor and Hon. Abiola Makinde, visited His Imperial Majesty, Dr. Victor Kiladejo CFR, the Osemawe of Ondo. They extended condolences regarding the flood and assured His Majesty of the federal government’s ongoing support through NEMA.

This visit is part of NEMA’s broader initiative to strengthen partnerships with state governments to ensure effective and timely disaster responses across Nigeria.
