Five Students Abducted As Gunmen Attack Rivers Community
Police authorities say the attack happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday when roughly five suspected cult members invaded a remote area of the community, firing shots wildly before abducting their victims and fleeing to an unknown destination.
The abducted individuals are believed to be students of the Rivers State University, Emohua campus. This was confirmed by the vice chancellor, Prof. Zeb Obioi, in a circulating video where he addressed university staff and students. He noted that the matter would likely be raised during the upcoming convocation ceremonies and expressed hope that dignitaries in attendance would take the security concerns seriously. “Our main concern now is securing the release of our students,” he said.
Prof. Obioi further vowed that the school would work with security agencies to ensure the safe return of the captives. “Those behind this wicked act must be found. We will pursue them until they are brought to justice,” he added.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the area with other security heads to assess the situation firsthand. He ordered the Area Commander, tactical squads, and the Joint Task Force to intensify efforts to rescue the victims and track down the criminals.
The CP assured residents that the attackers will be located and prosecuted, urging the community to remain calm. The Command also appealed for reliable information from the public to support ongoing investigations.
