The Nigerian government has denied reports claiming that it has suspended the release of implementation guidelines for the country’s newly introduced tax laws.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, described the reports as “fake news.”

Oyedele’s clarification comes amid growing controversy surrounding the new tax laws, which came into effect barely two weeks ago.

Since their introduction, the tax reforms have faced strong opposition from several quarters, with calls for suspension coming from former presidential candidate Peter Obi, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other civil society organisations.

Despite the mounting pressure, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NIRS), Zacch Adedeji, has rejected calls for suspension. Speaking in a recent interview on TVC, Adedeji insisted that the tax reforms are beneficial to Nigerians and should be allowed to continue.

He maintained that the new tax framework is designed to strengthen government revenue, improve fiscal discipline, and support long-term economic development in the country.
