FG Approves Medical Helicopter To Boost Emergency Health Response
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the acquisition of an emergency medical helicopter as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s response to critical health situations.
The development was disclosed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, who revealed that discussions are already underway with Airbus to establish a coordinated air and ground emergency medical system in the country.
According to the minister, the initiative is designed to link air ambulance services with existing ground response systems, ensuring faster and more efficient medical intervention during emergencies.
As part of the engagement process, Pate recently visited an air ambulance facility in Lyon, France, where he assessed the operational capabilities of emergency medical helicopters used in advanced healthcare systems.
The proposed helicopter service is expected to complement ongoing efforts to upgrade Nigeria’s emergency medical framework, particularly under the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme.
The Federal Government is also working to expand ambulance services in urban centres while improving response mechanisms in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
Health experts believe that the introduction of air-based emergency response will significantly reduce response time in life-threatening situations such as accidents, maternal emergencies, and severe illnesses.
The initiative forms part of broader healthcare reforms aimed at improving access, efficiency, and quality of medical services across Nigeria.
If successfully implemented, the programme is expected to mark a major step forward in Nigeria’s emergency healthcare delivery system, particularly in reaching underserved and remote communities.
