FCT POLICE URGE NLC TO RESCHEDULE PROTEST OVER SECURITY CONCERNS

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to reschedule its planned protest in solidarity with striking workers of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

In a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the Police disclosed that intelligence reports indicate plans by members of the proscribed Shiite Islamic sect and other non-state actors to infiltrate the protest and instigate violence.

According to the Police, the appeal to reschedule the protest is aimed at preventing a breakdown of law and order and ensuring the safety of residents, as well as protecting the rights of others to free movement and the conduct of lawful daily activities.

The statement noted that while the Police respect the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, security agencies must take proactive steps when credible threats to public peace are identified.

“The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command is aware of a planned peaceful protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council scheduled to hold on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, within the Federal Capital Territory,” the statement said.

It added that intelligence available to the Police suggests attempts by certain groups to hijack the protest for purposes inimical to public safety, prompting the call for a change in date and time.

The Command assured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security in the FCT.

Meanwhile, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had earlier announced plans to hold a peaceful solidarity rally on February 3 in support of JUAC, which is currently leading an indefinite strike by FCDA workers over the non-payment of salaries.
