Former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South leader, Chief (Dr.) Senator Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, has passed away at the age of 97.
According to a statement credited to his family, the chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) died on Monday night, February 17, 2025.
The statement read:
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, on Monday, February 17, 2025.”
Born in Kiagbodo, in the present-day Delta State, Clark attended primary and secondary schools in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene before completing further studies at the Government Teacher Training College, which later became Delta State University, Abraka. He briefly worked as a schoolteacher before traveling abroad to obtain a law degree.
Clark played a significant role in Nigeria’s governance, serving in the administrations of military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, between 1966 and 1975. In 1966, he was a member of an advisory committee to the military governor of the Mid-Western Region, David Ejoor, before being appointed Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975.
A revered statesman and tireless advocate for the Niger Delta, Clark’s contributions to regional and national development remain indelible.
