Security forces, including police, military personnel, and undercover agents, have been deployed across key locations in Uromi, the headquarters of Esan North East Local Government Area in Edo State. The move follows the killing of 16 northern travelers by a mob last Thursday.

Authorities have heightened security in the area to prevent possible retaliatory attacks, while residents remain tense. Many locals are reluctant to discuss the incident openly, especially after at least 14 individuals were reportedly arrested in connection with the violence.

Community members suggest that the rising activities of kidnappers across Edo Central and parts of Edo North might have fueled the mob’s actions. However, they acknowledge that taking the law into their own hands was unjustifiable.

In addition to a strong police presence, military patrols have been spotted along major roads and suspected flashpoints to monitor movement and maintain order. The presence of plainclothes security officers has also raised suspicions, making locals wary of unfamiliar faces.

One commercial motorcyclist, who initially engaged in a friendly conversation with a reporter, quickly distanced himself from the situation when asked about the attack. “I don’t work here; I work in Ekpoma. I only came here today. I only heard about the incident when I got home,” he said.

Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, confirmed that the case has been taken over by Force Headquarters. While he could not provide updates on the investigation, he assured that officers remain on the ground to maintain peace and prevent further unrest.
