Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in public schools across the state, citing their deplorable condition.

During an inspection tour of schools in Ikpoba-Okha and Egor local government areas, the governor expressed deep concern over the poor state of urban schools. He emphasized that Edo children deserved a conducive learning environment to help them reach their full potential.

Okpebholo recalled that during his campaign, he had pledged to prioritize schools lacking modern facilities, and he reaffirmed his commitment to that promise. Visiting Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha and Evbareke Secondary School in Egor, he was visibly displeased with the conditions in which students were being educated.

“I am deeply saddened by the state of the schools I visited today. It is unacceptable for our children to learn in such conditions,” he stated.

The governor announced that work would begin immediately, starting with Evbareke and Army Day Secondary Schools. He highlighted major concerns, including the absence of perimeter fencing and severe erosion that had damaged the road leading to Army Day Secondary School.

“The road to Army Day Secondary School, which connects Boundary Road to Temboga, is in terrible condition, making it difficult for students to access education,” Okpebholo added.

Edo State Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, noted that the governor’s visit aimed to assess students’ challenges firsthand and ensure they had access to quality education, proper infrastructure, and well-trained teachers.

Governor Okpebholo is committed to practical governance. He wants to deliver real solutions to the people of Edo,” Iyamu said. He also assured that under the governor’s leadership, efforts would be made to provide inclusive education, ensuring that all children, including those with disabilities, had equal opportunities.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Mary Izewingie, Vice Principal of Students’ Affairs at Evbareke Secondary School, revealed that despite repeated appeals since 2022, no action had been taken to address the school’s deteriorating state.

We have cried out for help, but no one listened. Learning conditions have been tough for our students. We even tried to fix some issues ourselves, but the rains undid our efforts,” she lamented.

With the governor’s intervention, Edo residents now anticipate swift action to improve school infrastructure and create a better learning environment for students.
