During an event held on Thursday, Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), highlighted the commission’s dedication to leveraging information and communication technology (ICT) to transform Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Represented by Philip Eretan, Maida noted that the new e-health initiative is aimed at enhancing both access to and the quality of healthcare delivery nationwide.
He emphasized that the project’s completion reflects the NCC’s ongoing commitment to promoting innovation, research, and advancement within the country’s digital economy.
“This initiative serves a dual purpose,” Maida said. “Firstly, it enables the healthcare sector to benefit from the digital integration already enjoyed by other parts of the economy. Secondly, improved healthcare leads to a healthier population that is better equipped to participate in and contribute to the digital economy.”
He expressed optimism that the e-health project would accelerate the integration of ICT into medical services, streamlining operations, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing the management of health records.
“The advantages of this system go beyond hospitals, creating broader community benefits and setting a model for other health institutions across the nation,” he added.
In his remarks, Adesina Akintan, Acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital in Akure represented by Ndidi Okuniga described the electronic medical records (EMR) system as a digital alternative to traditional paper records, enabling efficient storage and access to patient histories.
Akintan expressed gratitude to the NCC for its support, noting that the system would help reduce paperwork, limit errors, and allow medical professionals to devote more time to patient care. He also assured that the hospital would make effective use of the provided equipment.
