Speculation over a possible political comeback by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been met with caution from the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), which insists that he must demonstrate genuine signs of change before earning the nation’s trust again.

During a Thursday appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad-Baba, acknowledged that Jonathan might be seen as a viable option by some Nigerians. However, he stressed that the same electorate once voted him out, and would now require clear evidence of transformation before offering renewed support.

“Jonathan may be considered by some, but Nigerians need to see real change from the man they removed from office,” Muhammad-Baba said.

Political observers note that talk of Jonathan’s return has been gaining momentum in recent months, fueled by rising dissatisfaction with current governance and ongoing debates over credible alternatives for the 2027 general elections.

Uncertainty still surrounds Jonathan’s political direction, with speculation about whether he would return under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or join another platform. The ACF, however, maintains that party affiliation alone will not erase what it sees as a “credibility gap” that must be addressed head-on.

For many Nigerians, the debate is no longer just about if Jonathan will run again, but whether he can convince the nation that a second term would bring tangible improvements and not a repeat of the past.
