COURTS SHOULD STAY OUT OF PDP’S INTERNAL AFFAIRS – EME MOBONG WARNS
The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ini Ememobong, has cautioned the judiciary against interfering in the internal affairs of political parties, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in the judicial process.
Ememobong made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, while reacting to a recent court judgment that nullified the PDP convention held in Ibadan.
He questioned the basis of the ruling, arguing that the judgment failed to align with provisions of the PDP constitution, particularly on the issue of a national caretaker committee.
According to him, while he holds the judiciary in high regard, courts should exercise restraint in matters concerning the internal management of political parties.
“I have tremendous respect for the court, which is why the court should stay away from the internal affairs of political parties so that they don’t become politicians,” Ememobong said.
He stressed that although perception and reality may differ, justice loses credibility when public trust in the process is eroded.
Ememobong also alluded to perceived conflicts of interest, referencing public interactions between the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, particularly regarding requests for land and housing for judges.
While clarifying that he was not accusing the judiciary of wrongdoing, he emphasised that perception plays a critical role in the administration of justice.
“Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done,” he noted, adding that public confidence in the legal system is essential for democracy to thrive.
His comments come amid growing debate over judicial involvement in party affairs and its implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.
