The Federal High Court in Abuja is scheduled to hear multiple contempt applications today, Tuesday, in the ongoing legal dispute between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) and the Senate leadership over her suspension.

The case, filed under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025, names the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Senate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Neda Imasuen Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Code of Conduct as defendants.

During Monday’s proceedings, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s counsel, Jibrin Okutekpa (SAN), informed Justice Binta Nyako who took over the case after Justice Obiorah Egwuatu recused himself that all necessary documents had been filed as required by earlier court orders.

Defense lawyers for the Senate and Senate President, Paul Daudu (SAN) and Ekwo Ejembi Ekwo, confirmed the submission of their responses but raised concerns over an alleged breach of court orders. They pointed to a satirical apology published on Facebook and in newspapers on March 27, 2025, claiming it was linked to the plaintiff.

Michael Numan (SAN), also appearing for Akpoti-Uduaghan, acknowledged receipt of the motion but denied any connection between his client and the publication. He also reminded the court that a contempt application had previously been filed against the Senate and its leadership for allegedly flouting judicial instructions.

The legal team representing Akpoti-Uduaghan is pushing for sanctions against the Senate for what they argue was an illegal suspension and failure to comply with court rulings.

In a brief statement, Justice Nyako stressed that the contempt matters must be addressed before the main case can proceed. She adjourned the matter to noon today, Tuesday, May 13, for a consolidated hearing on all motions and the substantive suit.

Meanwhile, Senate President Akpabio has dissociated senior lawyers Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) and Monday Ubani (SAN) from the defense in the ongoing suspension case involving Akpoti-Uduaghan.
