Court sitting in Abuja has given Omoyele Sowore 24 hours to fulfill his bail conditions or face police detention until the conditions are met.
As part of the bail requirements, the surety must be a responsible individual who owns landed property equivalent to the bail sum. Additionally, the surety is required to submit the original property documents and a passport photograph to the court registrar.
Delivering the ruling on the bail application, Justice Musa Liman also ordered Sowore to surrender his international passport to the court registrar. The judge emphasized that failure to meet the bail conditions within 24 hours would result in Sowore being held by the police until compliance is ensured.
Sowore had initially reported to the police on Monday, January 27, 2025, in response to an invitation from the Force Criminal Investigation Department. While he was granted administrative bail, he refused to accept the conditions and chose to remain in custody.
Subsequently, the police filed a 16-count cybercrime charge against him.
One of the charges alleged that on December 20, 2024, Sowore referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as the “illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force” in a post on his X handle.
The police further accused Sowore of posting Egbetokun’s picture with the caption: “Mediocrity, incompetence, corruption a country run by characterless people cannot make progress.”
Another charge claimed that Sowore had warned that “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria Police if we don’t act now.”
Sowore pleaded not guilty to all 16 charges of alleged cybercrime.
