Court Defers El-Rufai’s Bail Hearing Until Formal Charges Are Read

A High Court on Wednesday refused to consider a bail application filed by a defendant, ruling that the request was filed too early because the accused had yet to be formally arraigned.

The prosecution, led by Oluwole Aladedoye, urged the court to stand down the application, arguing that bail could not be entertained until the defendant had taken a plea.

Delivering a brief ruling, Justice Joyce Abdumalik held that the application was “premature,” stressing that the defendant must first be arraigned before the court could consider any request for bail.

The judge subsequently adjourned the matter to April 23, 2026, for arraignment.
The decision means the defendant will remain in custody pending the next court date, when formal charges are expected to be read.
