Build voters trust_EU task INEC
The European Union Support for Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN) and the International Press Centre (IPC) have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to foster public trust in the electoral process through transparency and effective communication. They made this call during a two-day workshop held in Ikogosi Ekiti, Ekiti State, aimed at preparing INEC staff for the upcoming November 16, 2024, governorship election in Ondo State.
Lanre Arogundade, IPC’s Executive Director, emphasized that gaining citizens’ trust is crucial for the legitimacy of elections. He stressed the importance of INEC providing clear, timely, and accessible information to build confidence among voters. Arogundade noted existing public mistrust in INEC and suggested that effective engagement could help restore that trust. He advised political parties to adhere to electoral rules and warned that candidates whose supporters engage in violence would be held accountable.
He also encouraged registered voters in Ondo State to actively participate in the elections, cautioning against selling their votes, as doing so undermines their future. Arogundade highlighted the importance of voting according to one’s conscience.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo State, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, stated that the workshop would enhance the communication skills of INEC staff and positively influence public confidence. She assured that INEC is prepared to conduct a credible, free, and fair election, with every vote counting.
Babalola mentioned that INEC is actively educating voters through various channels and collaborating with civil society organizations. She confirmed that the necessary voting technology is ready and emphasized that results will be promptly uploaded to the INEC results portal. She urged voters not to sell their votes and reassured them that measures are in place to combat vote-buying. Finally, she noted that INEC has begun distributing election materials to local government areas in preparation for the election.
