The former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Chief Benjamin Sunday Elue, is dead.
News of his passing has cast a sombre mood across the state, particularly in Aniocha North, his home local government area, where he was widely respected as a political leader and community figure.

Chief Elue served as Deputy Governor from 1999 to 2007, playing a key role in the formative years of Delta State’s Fourth Republic administration. During his time in office, he was regarded as a steady hand in government and a bridge-builder across political and ethnic divides.

Reacting to the development, the immediate past Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, described the late statesman as a “revered political leader” whose death is a significant loss to the state.

I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our revered political leader, Chief Benjamin Sunday Elue, who served as Deputy Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007,” the statement read.

Beyond politics, Chief Elue was known as a seasoned educationist and grassroots mobiliser. He was widely acknowledged for his modest lifestyle and commitment to public service.

The tribute further noted: “Chief Elue was a renowned teacher, respected community leader, and astute politician whose lifestyle was worthy of emulation. His dedication to Delta’s growth and stability remains an enduring part of our shared history.”

Condolences have continued to pour in from political leaders, community stakeholders, and residents across the state, many describing his death as the end of an era.
The statement also extended sympathy to his immediate family and constituents.

On behalf of my family, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the good people of Aniocha North, and Delta State at large. May God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort all those he has left behind.”  Dr. Okowa added.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
