Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after serving nearly two years of her six-year sentence in the United Kingdom. Reports indicate that she was granted early release on the grounds of good behavior, while her husband continues to serve his 10-year prison term.

In 2023, Ike Ekweremadu, Beatrice, and their associate, Dr. Obinna Obeta, were convicted in the UK for conspiring to exploit a financially disadvantaged street vendor. The trio arranged to transport the victim to the UK under the pretense of offering him better opportunities but with the concealed intent of using him as a kidney donor for their daughter, Sonia Ekweremadu, who required a transplant.

The victim was reportedly promised travel sponsorship and a better life abroad. However, during medical consultations at the Royal Free Hospital in London, doctors revealed the actual purpose of his trip—the planned kidney transplant. This revelation led the victim to realize the true nature of the arrangement.

Testifying in court, the victim stated that he would never have consented to the procedure had he been informed of the real reason behind the trip, emphasizing that “his body was not for sale.”

Following a thorough investigation, the UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) found the Ekweremadus and Dr. Obeta guilty of human trafficking for organ harvesting. Lynette Woodrow, the deputy chief crown prosecutor and national modern slavery lead at the CPS, confirmed their conviction, describing the case as a stark violation of human rights.

While Beatrice Ekweremadu has returned to Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu remains incarcerated in the UK, serving his sentence for his role in the illegal organ trafficking scheme.
