The member representing Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Omosede Igbinedion, has condemned the reported bullying incident involving a group of students at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, describing the development as disturbing and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the lawmaker, who is also an alumna of the school, said she received reports of the incident “with deep concern,” stressing that such conduct contradicts the values the institution represents.

I have received with deep concern the reports regarding the recent bullying incident involving a group of students at Igbinedion Education Centre, Benin City,” Igbinedion said.

She noted that the institution has long been known for promoting discipline, respect, and academic excellence, adding that any behaviour that undermines those standards should be strongly condemned.

As an alumna of this great institution and a proud product of the values it seeks to instill in its students, I find the incident deeply troubling,” she said.

Igbinedion, however, commended the swift response by the school’s management and board in handling the matter.

According to her, the authorities took decisive steps including expelling the students involved, inviting the police to formally document the incident, and ensuring the affected student received independent medical evaluation and care.

I commend the swift and responsible actions taken by the Board and Management of the school in addressing the situation,” she stated.

The lawmaker stressed that bullying should have no place in schools, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in guiding young people.

Bullying in any form is unacceptable. Our schools must remain spaces where every child feels safe, protected, and respected,” she said.

She also expressed sympathy for the affected student and family, while acknowledging the courage involved in bringing the incident to light.

I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the student who was subjected to this unfortunate experience and commend the courage shown in bringing the matter to light,” she added.

Igbinedion further said that beyond disciplinary action, the incident should serve as a reminder of the need to reinforce values such as empathy, kindness, and respect among students.

As the Member representing Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, I remain committed to supporting policies and initiatives that protect children, strengthen educational institutions, and promote safe learning environments across our nation,” she said.

She urged students to demonstrate strength through compassion rather than intimidation, emphasizing the importance of standing up for what is right.
