ASUU Takes Action: Nationwide Two-Week Strike Shuts Down Universities
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday announced a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.
The declaration was made by the union’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press conference held at the University of Abuja.
According to Piwuna, the decision followed the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government on September 28, 2025, noting that no meaningful action had been taken to address the lecturers’ long-standing demands.
“Colleagues of the press, it is now clear that there is no sufficient commitment from the government to prevent the implementation of our NEC’s resolution to commence a two-week warning strike after the expiration of our 14-day notice,” he said.
He directed all ASUU branches nationwide to suspend academic activities beginning from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, adding that the strike would be “total and comprehensive,”in line with the union’s NEC resolution.
The latest development marks another phase in the recurring dispute between ASUU and the Federal Government, despite ongoing negotiations intended to prevent industrial action.
Last Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that the government was in the final stage of discussions with ASUU and other university unions to resolve outstanding issues regarding staff welfare, funding, and the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
Alausa further explained that the Tinubu administration had made notable progress by releasing ₦50 billion for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, while an additional ₦150 billion had been included in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three phases.
