The All Progressives Congress (APC) factions in Rivers State are currently embroiled in a conflict over the potential impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The faction led by Tony Okocha, which is recognized by the APC’s national leadership, has demanded that Fubara either resign honourably or face impeachment, accusing him of committing multiple impeachable offenses. However, the court-recognized state leadership of the party, loyal to former Governor Rotimi Amaechi and headed by Emeka Bekee, has condemned Okocha for making such demands, pushing back against calls for Fubara’s removal.

Despite the political turmoil surrounding his administration, Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State that they would ultimately emerge stronger. He urged citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding for the greater good of the state.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, along with 26 lawmakers, ignored a peace meeting convened by Fubara at the Government House. Additionally, the Amaewhule-led Assembly has followed through on its threat by issuing an arrest warrant for the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli, along with four other commissioners. In a related development, RSIEC Commissioner Ibierembo Thompson has resigned from the electoral body, citing the Supreme Court’s recent judgment regarding the conduct of the October 5, 2024, local government elections in the state.
Concerned about the escalating crisis, former Governor Rufus Ada-George has called on all factions to de-escalate tensions, avoid inflammatory statements, and halt ultimatums that could jeopardize peace in the state.
Addressing the media in Port Harcourt, Tony Okocha emphasized that the APC remains the primary opposition party in Rivers State and vowed to hold the governor accountable. He reiterated his criticism of Fubara, claiming the governor lacks leadership skills and that his recent invitation of the 27 lawmakers for a meeting was insignificant.
Okocha further dismissed the proposed meeting as futile, questioning its agenda and arguing that the invitation letter, which was signed by the Secretary to the State Government instead of the governor, was inappropriate. He asserted that the APC would not remain passive while Fubara allegedly mismanages the state.
