Amnesty International has denounced the alleged threats and intimidation against a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member following a viral TikTok video in which she criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over Nigeria’s economic challenges.
The corps member, identified on TikTok as @talktoraye, tearfully expressed frustration over the rising cost of living, citing inflation, fuel price hikes, and currency devaluation as major concerns. She described the current administration as “terrible” and accused the government of neglecting citizens facing economic hardship.
Following her video, the NYSC allegedly issued threats against her, sparking concerns about free speech suppression. In response, Amnesty International asserted that the corps member had every right to voice her grievances, emphasizing that expressing discontent peacefully is a fundamental right.
“It is perfectly within her rights to speak out,” the human rights organization stated. “Rather than targeting her for highlighting economic struggles, authorities should focus on addressing the financial hardship affecting millions.”
Amnesty International further noted that Nigeria’s worsening economic situation has plunged many into extreme poverty, yet effective relief measures remain absent.
“This incident raises further concerns about shrinking civic space in Nigeria,” the organization warned, highlighting the increasing harassment, detention, and legal action against critics of government policies.
The rights group urged Nigerian authorities to uphold constitutional and international protections for freedom of expression. “Dissenting opinions are not crimes,” Amnesty International asserted, calling for an end to threats and intimidation against individuals who challenge the government’s policies.
While officials have yet to respond to the allegations against the NYSC, advocacy groups continue to push for greater protection of free speech in Nigeria.
