A coalition representing the people of Akoko in the northern senatorial district of Ondo State has called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to immediately dissolve the 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) declared illegal by a state High Court.
The group, operating under the banner of the Akoko Development Initiative (ADI) which includes the Akoko Development Group (ADG), the Akoko Consultative Forum (ACF), and the Oka Community, urged the state government to begin a new, lawful process for establishing the councils in line with constitutional provisions.
In a joint statement signed by Fola Amure, Secretary of ADI, and Ibukun Rogbitan, Chairman of ACF, the coalition referenced the 2024 judgment by Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye of the Ondo State High Court, which voided the creation of the LCDAs by the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
According to the court, the creation of the councils violated Sections 7 and 8 of the 1999 Constitution, rendering the process unconstitutional, null, and void, The ruling also ordered the dissolution of the LCDAs and prohibited the state from taking further action regarding them.
The Akoko leaders, however, accused the current administration of ignoring the court’s directive, alleging that it continues to run the defunct LCDAs, make appointments, and allocate state funds to them.
They added that respected Akoko figures such as former Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi and elder statesman Seinde Arogbofa had earlier met with the governor, who promised to correct the imbalances and irregularities c ited in the court’s verdict.
