In line with the spirit of Ramadan, the Aliko Dangote Foundation has launched the distribution of one million 10kg bags of rice to support the less privileged across Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch event in Kano, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the foundation, emphasized the significance of the initiative in alleviating the difficulties faced by vulnerable citizens, particularly during Ramadan and Lent. Represented by his daughter, Mariya Aliko Dangote, he stated that the distribution would commence in Kano before expanding to the remaining 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“This initiative arises from our deep understanding of the struggles faced by many, especially during religious seasons like Ramadan and Lent. These are times of reflection and community, but they can also be marked by hardship. By offering this assistance, we hope to ease their burdens and allow them to focus on their spiritual practices,” he said.

Dangote also outlined the logistics of the distribution, noting that the foundation would collaborate with state and local governments to ensure a safe and efficient process, with security measures in place for beneficiary protection.

In Kano, the initiative complements the foundation’s existing feeding programs, which include:
– A daily feeding program for 10,000 vulnerable individuals, operational since the 1990s.
– The provision of 5,000 daily Iftar meals for those observing Ramadan.
– The distribution of 20,000 family-size loaves of bread in Kano and 12,500 loaves in Lagos, a program that began during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Additionally, Dangote reaffirmed his company’s commitment to combating malnutrition through food fortification efforts. This includes investments in iodized salt, vitamin A-enriched sugar, and fortified staple foods such as rice, wheat, and bouillon cubes.

“Ensuring food security is essential for health and well-being. Unfortunately, many Nigerians struggle daily to meet their food needs. This rice distribution initiative is not just an act of charity; it is a demonstration of our commitment to uplifting Nigerians and Africans. It aligns with our foundation’s four key focus areas: nutrition, health, education, and empowerment,” he added.

During the flag-off ceremony, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, commended Dangote’s efforts to mitigate hardship. He announced that 120,000 bags of rice would be allocated across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas. The state government has also established a supervisory committee to oversee fair and transparent distribution, urging officials to handle the process with integrity.

Zouera Youssoufou, Managing Director and CEO of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, reiterated Dangote’s commitment to philanthropy, describing the food distribution project as part of the foundation’s contribution to the fight against hunger and poverty.

Similarly, Dr. Mujahid Aminudeen, Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board in Kano, praised the initiative and urged other affluent Nigerians to follow Dangote’s example. He assured that Hisbah would help ensure the aid reaches those who need it most.

Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Ibrahim Ahmed expressed gratitude for the support, thanking Dangote for his continued humanitarian efforts.
