Okupe, 72, previously served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. He also held the position of Director-General for Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign.
However, his political career was not without controversy. In December 2022, Okupe stepped down from Obi’s campaign after being convicted of money laundering. Following the fallout of the 2023 general election, he resigned from the Labour Party and later became a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, frequently engaging in political discourse and analysis.
Known for his outspoken nature and strong political views, Okupe was both a respected and contentious figure in Nigerian politics.
Beyond politics, he was a physician and co-founder of the Royal Cross Medical Centre. He also served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC).
During General Sani Abacha’s regime, Okupe was detained and later disqualified from participating in the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries. Additionally, he was once a governorship aspirant for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.
