Residents of Eleyewo, Ilu Abo, Bolorunduro, and surrounding communities in Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, have called for the state government and relevant agencies to intervene after a rainstorm destroyed their properties on Monday. The storm caused extensive damage, affecting properties worth millions of naira, including vehicles, shops, and churches.

Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident. An eyewitness reported that strong winds accompanying the rain tore off the roofs of several buildings, including houses, shops, churches, and schools, and also damaged electric poles. Notably, the roof of LA Primary School and the Redeemed Christian Church in Ilu Abo were severely impacted, with the iron roofing sheets and ceilings destroyed. Additionally, the fence of Possibility Church collapsed.

Mr. Lukmon Haruna, whose shop and goods were destroyed, called on the government to intervene, saying, “The rain was so heavy, we couldn’t salvage anything. Over 20 houses and churches were affected, and we are pleading with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and philanthropists to assist us.”

Another victim, Mrs. Funmilayo Fadimu, whose house and shop were both damaged, also appealed to the state and federal governments for help, expressing difficulty in repairing her shop and replacing the destroyed items.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan, expressed his sympathy for the victims. He assured that officials from the State Emergency Management Agency would assess the damage and make recommendations for government assistance to those affected.
