The 2024 Ondo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Agboola Ajayi, has rejected the election results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, vowing to seek justice through the tribunal. Ajayi, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Ayo Fadaka, explained that he had remained silent since the announcement of the results to thoroughly investigate the alleged criminal activities by both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and INEC. He claimed that numerous actions had been taken to undermine the will of the people, pointing out that democracy cannot thrive in an environment where criminality is rampant during elections.

Ajayi criticized INEC for continuing the pattern of election manipulation under the current government, which he believes has led to a decline in voter trust and increased disenchantment with the electoral process. Without revealing the full details of his investigations, Ajayi called on those in power to live up to their responsibilities and ensure justice is served. He urged the judiciary to stand firm and deliver justice, warning that Nigeria’s continued decline could lead to serious consequences if the rule of law is not upheld.

In response to the election, the Idanre Development Assembly (IDA), a prominent socio-cultural group from Idanre, congratulated Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on his victory. In a letter from the group’s President-General, Dr. Anthony Omolola, the IDA expressed their belief that Aiyedatiwa’s win, securing all 18 local government areas in the election, was a clear indication of the people’s support. The letter also highlighted Aiyedatiwa’s promise to dualize the Akure-Idanre road, which they believe would significantly boost tourism and the local economy.

Former Defence Minister Tokunbo Kayode, SAN, also praised Aiyedatiwa’s victory, calling it a positive sign for the state’s future development. He commended both INEC and the security agencies for their efficient handling of the election process, emphasizing that the election results reflected the true will of the people.

Two members of the House of Representatives, Hon. Donald Ojogo and Hon. Adegboyega Adefarati, described Aiyedatiwa’s victory as well-deserved, citing the overwhelming support for his leadership. Ojogo attributed the victory to the people’s recognition of Aiyedatiwa’s hard work and dedication, while Adefarati highlighted the people’s trust in Aiyedatiwa’s leadership to guide the state toward further progress.

A foreign observer group, the International Police Chaplain Sustainable Development and Law Enforcement Inc. (USA), also weighed in, confirming that the election results reflected the true record of the votes cast at polling units. Spokesperson Oscar David praised the peaceful and transparent conduct of the election, urging candidates to use legal channels for contesting results to maintain social peace and order. The observer group noted that the election was largely successful, with minimal incidents and complaints from party agents.
