US President elect sends warning message to Russian president Vladimir Putin via first phone call

President-elect Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he cautioned against escalating the war in Ukraine. The call, which took place at Trump’s Florida resort, was their first since Trump secured the presidency. During the conversation, Trump reminded Putin of the substantial U.S. military presence in Europe, according to sources familiar with the details who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Trump’s relationship with Putin has been a point of scrutiny, particularly with ongoing investigations into potential connections between Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign. While Trump has previously praised Putin, including calling him “pretty smart” for invading Ukraine and complimenting Russia’s military history, the two leaders discussed potential paths to peace in Europe. Trump expressed interest in continued discussions aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, aligning with his campaign promise to end the war quickly, though he has not outlined specific strategies.

Trump has also privately shown support for a potential agreement that would allow Russia to keep control over some of the territories it has captured, mentioning the issue briefly during his call with Putin. Ukrainian officials were aware of the call and did not object, understanding that Trump planned to pursue diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.

Trump’s early interactions with world leaders have deviated from the norm, as they have not involved the U.S. State Department or government interpreters, a possible reflection of his mistrust of career officials, stemming from past leaks of presidential call transcripts. Consequently, leaders are reaching out to Trump directly, bypassing traditional diplomatic channels.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, commented that global leaders recognize Trump’s influence, noting that they are eager to build stronger relationships with him as he represents global peace and stability.
