Health workers threaten strike action in Ondo
Health workers in Ondo State, represented by the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), have issued a 15-day ultimatum to the state government to address their demands. This was communicated in a letter dated October 10, 2024, directed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and signed by the union’s State Chairman, Comrade Elusoji Olumide, and State Secretary, Comrade (Dr) Adeojo Michael.
The letter emphasizes the ongoing discriminatory practices against NUAHP members and highlights the government’s neglect of healthcare workers’ welfare amid economic challenges, inflation, and a poor work environment. It notes that while medical practitioners (doctors) have benefitted from various government initiatives, other healthcare workers continue to suffer.
Despite previous requests for support similar to that provided to federal health workers and those in other states, conditions remain unchanged, leading to frustration and demoralization among the union members.
The letter warns that if their demands are not met, they will be forced to withdraw their services from all state government hospitals indefinitely once the ultimatum expires. The union appeals for empathy and action from the governor, stressing that the neglect of healthcare workers’ needs hampers their ability to provide adequate patient care. The letter concludes with a plea for understanding and support from the governor.
