Life-ND Importance to Niger delta
Ten months ago, during the inauguration of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board and management in November 2023, Minister of State for Niger Delta Development Mr. Abubakar Momoh urged the team to transform the agency. Although he didn’t specify the issues to address, recent developments show that the NDDC has transitioned from a period of theoretical growth and waste to one of real progress for the Niger Delta region through effective infrastructure and sustainable development initiatives.
The Niger Delta, an oil-rich area plagued by infrastructural deficits, environmental damage, and socioeconomic challenges, has long struggled with insufficient and poorly executed policies. Past administrations made efforts to address these issues, but their actions often fell short of the region’s needs and failed to significantly combat youth unemployment.
The current NDDC leadership, however, has introduced impactful initiatives. Notably, the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises – Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) program, funded by a $60 million contribution from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and a $30 million contribution from the NDDC, aims to enhance agribusiness and address unemployment, benefiting over 38,000 people in Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Rivers states over six years.
Additionally, the NDDC recently launched a 12-month internship program in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, targeting 10,000 youths across the Niger Delta. This program aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and offers practical training and stipends to participants, including a special focus on persons with disabilities, marking a significant step towards inclusivity.
Earlier in 2023, the NDDC also commissioned major projects such as the N8.3 billion 132kv transmission line in Ondo and the 27.35km Ogbia-Nembe road in Bayelsa, and awarded scholarships to 200 candidates for Master’s degrees abroad.
These developments reflect a shift from mere theoretical growth to tangible achievements, driven by the NDDC’s current leadership and supported by the presidency and the Ministry of Niger Delta Development. The board has been proactive in addressing development needs, emphasizing collaboration with stakeholders, and executing projects based on thorough assessments.
Chairman Mr. Chiedu Ebie has highlighted the importance of stakeholder collaboration and effective communication in driving the “Renewed Hope Agenda.” His leadership underscores a commitment to achieving sustainable development and a positive future for the Niger Delta region.
